Tedim Road Bandh suspended

IMPHAL, Aug 25: At least two vehicles were been damaged by bandh supporters today during the indefinite bandh called by the JAC Against the Acquisition of Land for Expansion and Extension of Imphal Airport. The indefinite bandh, however, has been suspended for sometime following a meeting between the representatives of the JAC and Transport Minister L Jayantakumar later during the day.

According to a statement issued by the JAC, the indefinite bandh has been suspended for sometime after the Transports Minister contacted the Chief Minister who is currently at Delhi and gave the assurance of a joint meeting to discuss the demand of the JAC after the Chief Minister returns to Imphal. The JAC had enforced the bandh in the surrounding areas of the airport as well as along Mayang Imphal and Tiddim Road passing through the area to register protest against acquisition for expansion of the airport until an agreement is brought about with the would-be affected villagers. During the course of the bandh at around 1 pm, stone pelting bandh supporters damaged two vehicles at Malom Bazar. On receiving the news, additional police force rushed in and dispersed the bandh supporters with tear gas canisters. There is no report of any injury in the police crackdown. Later on security personnel were deployed all along Tiddim line and disrupted traffic resumed. The ban-dh, however, could not disrupt the flight service and it con- tinue as normal. The indefinite bandh mainly effective in the areas of Malom, Ningomthong and Mongsangei.
